The breeding of wire-hair
Portuguese Podengo Pequenos is an interesting art and science.
This type and variety of Portuguese Podengo was almost
extinct in the 1960's in Portugal, and only with
the hard work of several very serious breeders
was it brought back to the PPPWH of today. Trying to
obtain the correct wire coat in addition to the
correct conformation along with all of the other points that
our Standard calls for is not an easy task and
requires a great deal of thought, observation, study, and
luck !!
This type and variety of PP hunts rabbits and
that ability, too, must enter into the equation, although we do
not have that many hunters using this breed for
this purpose in the USA yet. Remember, with the
exception of a few PP Hollywood "movie stars",
the PP breed did not really start being imported into the
USA until shortly after the new millennium began.
With the help of some excellent Portuguese breeders,
we've had some very nice foundation stock come to
America to help us all build the strong foundation
for this rare breed in our country.
LITTERS: We usually breed only one or two litters a
year at Podengos da Floresta Kennels. We believe
in quality rather than quantity and we put
a great deal of time into socializing and early training of
our puppies, be they show or pet quality.
We want them to ease into their new homes smoothly
and with good habits starting to form.
We start crate training, lead training, and house breaking
before our puppies leave us at 10 weeks of
age (in the US - older if going abroad). They will have
had their first vaccine, been wormed if
needed, and have had a thorough physical exam - including
palpation of their knees. Our puppies
are "family raised" in the house; they are not raised or run
in kennels. When they are old enough,
they are put in the fenced-in dog yard for lots of play during
the day with us in attendance. When they
are about 6 weeks old, we begin walking them in the woods,
also, if it is not midwinter.
